The Adventure of the Devil's Foot
Holmes always took great interests in such odd cases. He asked Mr. Tregennis to talk about the details of that night and their family. Tregennis remarked, "We were all excited when playing cards together. The window was shut at that time. But the blind was drawn up. One time I noticed one of my brothers looking out of the window. When I looked around, I saw something seemed to be moving. But it was not clear. The next day, however, the case happened. I cannot imagine anything that could terrify them so dreadfully except the Devil. My family used to be tin-miners. Later we sold it. I cannot deny that we did not have a harmonious relationship for money's sake. But it has been a long time. We are getting along very well."
Holmes decided to take a look around the scene. He saw the hostess there. She was the very person who first saw the disaster. "In the early morning," she remarked, "when I entered the room and spotted the horrible scene of the three people, I was suddenly frightened to faint." After the hostess finished her story, Holmes went inside the room where the disaster happened. The over-night charcoal was still in the fireplace of the room. There were four burnt out candles on the table. The playing cards spread all over the table. Holmes examined everywhere carefully.
